The Voice of Cardboard Piano; Award-Winning Playwright Hansol Jung

The Los Angeles Premiere of Cardboard Piano is currently underway at International City Theatre, bringing a gripping new drama about the religious and cultural roots of intolerance to the Long Beach stage. Artistic Director caryn desai first fell in love with Cardboard Piano at the 2016 Humana Festival for New Plays, and knew she needed to bring this story to ICT. The mastermind behind this incredible story is the world renowned playwright, Hansol Jung.

Originally from South Korea, Hansol Jung is a playwright and director of theatre, working in different countries across the world. Jung holds an MFA in playwriting from Yale School of Drama, and is a proud member of the Ma-Yi writer’s lab. Productions include Cardboard Piano (Humana Festival), Among The Dead (Ma-Yi Theatre), No More Sad Things (Sideshow Theatre/Boise Contemporary Theatre), Wolf Play, and Wild Goose Dreams (La Jolla Playhouse). Her works have been developed at the Royal Court in London, New York Theatre Workshop, Berkeley Repertory’s Ground Floor, Sundance Theatre Lab, Boston Court Theatre, and Asia Society New York.

In addition, Jung has worked as a director, lyricist, and translator on many award-wining theatrical productions in Seoul, South Korea. Jung has translated over 30 musicals from English to Korean, including Evita, Dracula, Spamalot, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. She is also the recipient of the Page 73 Playwright Fellowship, 2050 Fellowship at New York Theatre Workshop, and International Playwrights residency at the Royal Court. Just last March, Hansol Jung was one of three recipients of the 2018 Whiting Award, rewarding her $50,000 for her accomplishments in playwriting. Jung’s plays were awarded for their ability to, “knit together the agonies of Korean history, the restless excitement and anxiety of the tech age, and the shapes of loss and longing.”

The Los Angeles Premiere of Cardboard Piano will perform at the Beverly O’Neill Theatre at Long Beach Performing Arts Center from May 2 – May 20, 2018. There will be an Opening Night Gala on May 4th and a post-show talk back on May 13th following the 2 PM performance.
